Places to visit in the Old City of Jerusalem

 

Walls surround the Old City. They were built in the 16th century.

The Old City is divided into quarters: Jewish, Armenian, Christian and Muslim.

 

The Kotel (the Western Wall or the Wailing Wall)

The Western Wall is the holiest place for the Jews, that come to weep over the destruction of the Temple and pray for its "rebuilding speedily in our day". It became the focus of the Jewish World.

It is located in the Jewish Quarter.

The word 'Kotel' means, "wall". The Kotel was the western supporting wall of the Temple that remained standing after the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in the year 70 CE.

 

Dome of the Rock

One of the two most important shrines of Islam's located in the Muslim Quarter on the Temple Mount.

This is the oldest Muslim building, which has survived basically intact in its original form. It was built by the Caliph Abd Al-Malik and was completed in 691 CE. The building encloses a huge rock located at its center, from which, according to tradition, the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven at the end of his Night Journey.

 

Al-Aksa Mosque

One of the two most important shrines of Islam's located in the Muslim Quarter on the Temple Mount.

El-Aksa was built by the Caliph Al-Walid (r. 705-715), of the Umayyad dynasty, and is one of the largest mosques in the Muslim world.

 

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher

Located in the Christian Quarter, it is revered by Christians as the site of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The fourth-century Church was largely destroyed by Caliph Al-Hakim in 1009, and partially restored in 1048.

 

The Tower of David

A fortress first constructed 2,000 years ago by Herod the Great. It dominates the Old City from the highest point in the area.

 

The Tower of David Museum

The Museum traces Jerusalem long history, utilizing the most advanced technologies.

 

The Via Dolorosa (TheWay of Sorrows)

This is a path believed to be the route where Jesus walked while bearing the cross from the Place of Judgment (Praetorium) to Calvary,to his crucifixion.The route marks the 14 stations in the Way of the cross, from the first station where Jesus was condemned to death along the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem, and ends inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

 

The Arabic Market

The market is set along the narrow streets and alleys of the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.

 

The Cardo

The Cardo is the reconstructed main street, in the Jewish Quarter, that used to be a long avenue that crossed the whole city of the Byzantine Jerusalem in the 6th century. There are rows of columns along its entire length. Today, you can find in the many Jewish galleries and shops.
