Baruch Albert
was born in Ritbak, Ologpul province, on 1876 (5636).
He owned an oil factory
in the town of Bershad in the Ukraine. The factory produced oil from sunflowers
and was started by his father Chaim. The factory was very successful and
employed many workers, most of them non-Jewish. Baruch Albert and his family
were very wealthy. They lived on an estate and had three children: Vardina
(Vitia), Eliezer (Lazar-Lusia) and Malka (Mania-Manichka).
Baruch and his wife Sheindl (Yaffa) Frida, were Zionists. They dreamed of going at some point in their lives to the Land of Israel, and made sure that all the family studied the Hebrew language. They did so by having a private Hebrew teacher at home.
The children were also thought music: singing, piano and mandolin.
Baruch had built a special hidden basement in his house, where the family could hide each time the Russian 'Mujikes' (rioters) came into the Jewish homes, stealing, destroying, assaulting, burning and even killing.
One day, in 1920, Baruch
was warned by one of his loyal Russian workers, that there was a plan to
attack the family's home, and kill them all. Baruch, his wife, children,
and all the other family members, who lived in that little town, took all
the money, gold and silver they had, hide them in some pillows. They arranged
to cross the border to Beserabia.
On 1921, the family
arrived in Haifa, in the land of Israel, penniless, after they used all
their money on the way. Baruch had to start all over again at the age of
43. For a while he was a simple worker in the harbor.
Some time later Baruch
moved with the family to Tel-Aviv, In 1924 they lived in Derech Hyam St.,
and in 1931 in Kfar Saba St. 21.
Later Baruch moved
to Jerusalem where he opened on Saint George St. a cotton-processing factory,
the first in the city.
Baruch lived on Zefania St. 39. He had a dream. He wanted to build a private house, and for that reason bought a peace of land in an area called 'Efrata' where he, together with other Jewish businessmen in Jerusalem planed a new neighborhood. The plan did not work out, since Jerusalem was divided in 1948.
Baruch was a modest and intelligent man. He spoke Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew, German and some Arabic.
Baruch Albert was a theistic man. He prayed two times a day, mornings and evenings kept the Shabbat and all the Jewish Holidays.
Baruch lost his wife Sheindl about three months before he died. All this time he was crying for the loss of his wife. "I don't want to cry, but the tears drop by themselves." he said.
Baruch Albert died on
Saturday, 18.11.1961 (10 Kislev 5722). He was 85 years old.
Sheindl and Baruch are buried in Jerusalem, in 'Har Hamenuchot' cemetery.
