MAX MELECH
14.5.1906 - 8.2.1982 |
(ALBERT) SCHMIDT 22.9.1911 - 17.1.91 |
Malka and Max met in the end of the summer, at a birthday party in Tel-Aviv on 1934. First, Malka was not sure that Max was Jewish. Then she found a prayer book that was given to him for his Bar Mitzvah, and after she found out that he could read the Hebrew letters and knew some of the Jewish prayers, she relaxed. They married on 3.7.1935.
In her memoirs Malka wrote: "We were married on the roof of the building were we lived. Max had arranged the flowers, colored light bulbs, a gramophone with records, drinks (the bottles were put on ice blocks in the bathtub, since we had no refrigerator), and food."
As a marriage gift, Malka's father gave them a mattress, her mother some sheets and pillows, and with the money they received as a presents, they bought a table and four chairs.
Malka and Max moved from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, to be close to Malka's elderly parents. Max founded a few businesses and Malka worked most of the years as a scientific secretary for the Medical School of the Hebrew University. They both had a son and three grandchildren.
Malka and Max enjoyed dancing, music, operas, concerts, movies and traveling. They loved to travel to Europe.
Max died in 1982 and
Malka was a widow for 9 years. During these years she had a great pleasure
with her three grandchildren.
