YITZHAKI VARDA 10.8.1928 - 27.3.2000 |
I, hereby, enclose a
form in the memory of my late, beloved wife, Varda Yitzhaki. I include
a few words describing her life history and that of her parents. In addition,
you will find a photograph of her and one of her tombstone.
Varda, of blessed memory,
was the daughter of Dr. Alexander Carmon, the son of Rabbi David Shlowshatz
from Odessa. His brothers were Professor Nahum Shlowshatz, a known literary
scholar and Moshe Carmon; author and teacher.
Her father immigrated
to Israel with the second Aliyah. He was a member of "Hashomer" and an
agricultural worker in Petach Tikvah. He fought for Jewish farmer rights
and was one of the founders of "Poalei Zion".
He was one of the signers
of the Charter of the General Histadrut of Israeli Workers. He completed
his studies in Italy. He and his brother, Moshe, along with all his family,
together with among others, the late Yitzhak Ben Zvi, were the founders
of The Gymnasia Rehavia as well as the Teachers Seminary in Beit Hakerem.
It was in that neighborhood that he built his home.
Her mother, Tamara,
who was born in Vilna, was one of the prettiest girls in her neighborhood.
Her picture still hangs on the wall of Beit HaVaad.
Varda, a graduate of
the Gymnasia and the Teachers Seminary, received her B.A. from the Humanities
department of the Hebew University. While she was studying, she joined
the "Haganah" and served as a liason on Mt. Scopus, Talpiot and Ramat Rachel
when the Egyptians were in control.
She taught at Lurie
School in Katamon. The students were those children who were driven out
of The Old City. She later taught junior high school at the Denmark School
where the renown Hedva Ish Shalom was the principal. At the same time,
she was active in community activities. She volunteered to teach Hebrew
to new immigrants, she prepared students for their matriculation exam.
She was a counselor in "Ozen Kashevet". She was the cultural director for
senior citizens, teaching them bible, literature, and creative writing which
she organized into very interesting pamphlets.
Even as a youngster
she excelled in writing poetry .She left her prolific writings, many of
which she read in her numerous appearances at school festivities and at
her various volunteer functions. Her book, "Holidays and Events at
School" was recognized by the Department of Education for use by teachers
from kindergarten through junior high school. Its contents are composed
of skits and poetry readings.
We, her husband, Yitzzhak,
her daughter Amalya, a veteran teacher who received her B.A. from the David
Yellin Teachers College (formerly the Teachers Seminary), and her son,
Lior who works for Israeli T.V. channel one, have all obligated ourselves
to keeping her memory alive amongst her many friends teachers and poets.
We plan to publish her many writings which she had put into drawers, demonstrating
her humility which was so typical of both her and her renowned father.
May her memory remain
in our hearts forever.
